Forgot I was in Stock Tech........
Tire tools, rags, flares....(the road kind)........ anything somebody would steal if you left the truck for 5 minutes.
They never, for some reason would look in there...........

A normal or just a little bit smaller than normal pad lock fits on the latch real good. I keep both of mine locked that way.
I used to keep my Hi-Lift in there, but it was hard to get at sometimes. Now I keep tow chain, snatch block, cable, slave cable adaptors, jumper cables, first aid kit, air hoses and all my OBA accessories in there with the Hi-Lift on a mount outside the bed with the rest of the Pioneer tools.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

I was talking to an ex-Marine (& a vet of the first Gulf War), and he said it was for storing ammo boxes. Say you were under fire -- you could use the door as a shield, and the storage compartment would be behind you, so you would still have some protection while you turned and re-loaded.
I can't say for sure that's what it's really for, but it sure makes sense to me!
As stated above, the Operators Manual clearly states it is a Tool Compartment for the Jack, lug wrench and etc.
It can be used as many things but this was the intended purpose.
I put a high lift jack in there. There are some tire chains in mine that were there when I baought it.
Would they even stop a 9mm ball round, I wonder....

Interesting observation, because the door while providing limited protection, would certainly be better than nothing, and could deflect or at least reduce the effectiveness of small arms, I wouldn't want to depend on it. Also, these trucks were well out of military service by the first Gulf War. My brother (Marine, 2 tours in Viet Nam) said that while his primary vehicle was a deuce, . .they like the M715 where he was because if you came under fire, you could attempt to escape because while it was no race car, ..it would certainly outrun the bigger trucks.
I couldnt seee how unless u stuffed yourself into the tool comp how the door could shield u from anything at all. He must have been thinking of some other type vehicle.
